many more businesses register to participate in Fernie

Community Dollars has been released and the list of registered businesses is growing daily.  Local Coordinators have been out talking about the many benefits C$ can offer with local businesses and community groups in Fernie.  ”Many of our local businesses speak about the hard place they are currently in because of the high Canadian dollar and impacts of the HST,”  says local coordinator Ryland Nelson.”Community Dollars are the solution helping to bring more local customers into our Fernie stores.”

In Fernie, Odyssey “Clothing for Your Journey”, Fernie Nature Tours, Kinesis Holistic Lifestyle & Exercise, and Fernie Stationers just signed up today.  Many more local businesses have expressed interest and are now considering what percentage of C$ they will accept.   During the month of July in Fernie the Local Coordinators are focusing on getting local businesses signed up and ready to use the currency.  In late July the C$  promotional materials will be released, so businesses are being encouraged to get involved now to ensure the are included in the comprehensive advertising campaign that will take place.

How we’re structured

We are structured in a way that has the people doing the work making organizational decisions by consensus.

Although we’re non-hierarchical, our group is being mentored by Michael Linton, who designed the Community Way model, as well as the LETSystem, variants of which (some extreme, some slight) are in use all over the world.

Our group operates according to our Memorandum of Agreement. Follow this link for some work in progress on this.

C$1 bill unveiled!

Happy Earth Day everyone!

The Community Dollars Development Group is proud to unveil the first image of our new currency –  the C$1!

The entire series of bills has been designed by Nelson’s Robet Strutin, of IMUstudios. The image on the front of the bill, Shannon Lake and Mount Vingolf (just North of the Valhalla Park) is provided by Douglas Noblet of Nelson. Monte Comeau of Salmo provided his photo, Great Blue Heron for the back.

A heartfelt thank-you to all of our photographers and to Robert, for his tireless efforts to make the currency so exceptionally beautiful.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll release the images of the remaining C$2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 bills while we excitedly await the arrival of the bills from our printer.

But, we’re not the only ones delighted to hold the bills in our hands. Trish Barnes of Trish Barnes Creative in Cranbrook was the first business to sign up officially in Community Dollars. Her recent post explains why she’s “like a bank”. Thanks Trish!

In the meantime, feel free to visit our website for the latest news and the current listing of interested businesses and community groups.

We are steadily meeting with business owners and community groups to support the adoption of C$ in our region. If you’re ready to sign-up, please contact your Local Coordinator (see below for contact details) to set up a time when you can meet, discuss the registration process, and complete the business registration or community group registration form.

If you prefer, you can also express your interest on our website, and we’ll follow up with you to answer any questions, and complete the registration process.

If you love the idea, ask your favourite business if they’ll be accepting C$, or make a pledge to exchange CAD$ for C$ on our website!

The bills will be arriving in the next few weeks. Thanks again for your enthusiasm and commitment to our community.

Wishing you all a very happy Earth Day,

~ Columbia Community Dollars

New businesses issue initial C$ donations in Kimberley

The Kimberley Trails Society (KTS) is one of Kimberley’s first beneficiaries of Community Dollars.

After hearing of their first donation from the Snowdrift Cafe, member Daz DeBoer said “”I’m planning to swap some Canadian $ for C$ on a monthly basis. So I’ll give $50 to KTS in return for C$50. Then I’ll spend the C$50 at participating businesses, and once I’m out, I’ll swap some more. Doesn’t cost me anything, and KTS ends up with Canadian Dollars to spend on projects, insurance etc.”

Right on Daz. This is exactly how C$ donations really benefit the community!

For more information on how your group can become a beneficiary of C$, contact info@communitydollars.ca. If you are a business and would like more information, or want to make a donation to a worthy group of your choosing, let us know!

Gaia Rising supports local currency

Thanks to Laureen and Vern Barker, owners of Gaia Rising in Nelson, who have this to say about Columbia Community Dollars:

“We are enthusiastic about local currency because we see this as a way of keeping consumers’ dollars in the community and supporting local businesses.  We see it as a way to support our local societies instead of having fundraising dollars leave the community, and as a way to reward volunteers.
